A brutal crime took place in the holiday paradise of Cape Verde, shocking the whole of Italy in 2007. For years, 33-year-old Dalia Saiani from Ravenna and 28-year-old Giorgia Busato from Verona had been vacationing on the Cape Verde island of Sal with its beautiful white sandy beaches to pursue their passion for windsurfing. During her vacation, the attractive Dalia met 23-year-old tour guide Sandro Santos Rosario, with whom she had a passionate summer romance that lasted two months. But when Dalia ended it, a real drama ensued, because Sandro simply refused to accept the abrupt ending. From then on, he bombarded Dalia with phone calls and voice messages. He was downright obsessed with Dalia and asked her for one last talk. Dalia agreed on the condition that her friend Giorgia and her 17-year-old friend Agnese come along, as she was afraid of Sandro. The three friends had arranged to meet at Dalia’s house on February 8, 2007, where Sandro was supposed to pick them up for dinner in the capital city of Espargos. When Sandro arrived at Dalia’s house in his car, he had two friends with him. But instead of driving into town, Sandro suddenly turned onto a gravel road. What happened next could have come straight from the pen of a horror writer. The young men dragged Dalia and Giorgia out of the car in a secluded palm forest near Fontana Beach, while they threatened Agnese and locked her in the car, where she was forced to listen and watch helplessly as her two friends were raped. The men then pushed the women into a dug-out pit, where they stoned Dalia and Giorgia to death. The young women repeatedly begged the two men not to kill them. Dalia, who owned a bathing establishment in Ravenna, even offered the men money to leave them alone. But Sandro wanted to carry out his “vendetta d’amore,” revenge out of love. They buried the two women alive in pits. Then they dragged Agnese out of the car and stoned her until she lost consciousness. Then they left her, thinking she was dead, and drove away. At dawn, Agnese woke up, covered in blood, ran back to the street, and hailed a taxi that took her to the Carabinieri. There she recounted the horrific ordeal, which left even the police speechless. The men were arrested and made a full confession.
