On March 2, 2019, young people found garbage bags in a canal in the Hungarian village of Jászalsószentgyörgy, which has a population of 3,000. The bags contained body parts that had been treated with hydrochloric acid to conceal the victim’s identity. Unfortunately, the body parts had not decomposed, which meant that the victim’s identity could be determined through DNA analysis. The victim was 32-year-old Tunisian Achref K., who had already been registered with the police and lived in an apartment in Vienna’s 16th district, Ottakring, with his partner Szilvia P. She was considered a prime suspect because her 51-year-old mother, Andrea, had purchased 10 liters of corrosive household acid at a hardware store in the area where Achref’s body was found. Both Szilvia and her mother Andrea were taken to the police station for questioning, where Szilvia made a full confession to the murder of Achref K., which could have come straight out of a horror movie script. On February 24, 2019, Szilvia and Achref had another argument over breakfast in their shared apartment. Once again, Achref became violent. Achref hit Szilvia and attacked her with a kitchen knife. A scuffle ensued between the two, during which Szilvia managed to grab the kitchen knife and stab Achref several times in a frenzy. When Szilvia realized that Achref was dead, she came up with the idea of dismembering his body. She used a knife and a hammer to do so. Szilvia severed Achref’s arms, legs, and head. She wrapped the body parts in towels and put them in several wheeled suitcases. Szilvia then organized a car-sharing vehicle, which she used to drive 350 kilometers to her family in Jászladány. The next day, her mother Andrea helped her dispose of the body parts. They packed them into garbage bags and drove a rental car to a sewer in Jászalsószentgyörgy. There, Szilvia poured hydrochloric acid over the garbage bags from outside. Then they threw them into the sewer and drove to McDonald’s to buy two vanilla milkshakes and drink them in peace. The neat and tidy Szilvia had once worked as a prostitute in Graz. After she moved in with Achref in Vienna, she screwed caps onto detergent bottles on an assembly line. But Szilvia and Achref argued more and more often. The reason for this was that Szilvia had not had sex with Achref for three months due to uterine problems, which is why he looked elsewhere. Szilvia caught Achref in flagrante delicto with a man during sexual intercourse. Since then, there had been repeated arguments between the two. Achref repeatedly hit Szilvia during their arguments. In the first instance, Szilvia P. was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the murder of Achref K. In the appeal proceedings, Szilvia’s sentence was reduced to 13 years in prison.
